Cumbaya
Cumbaya is part of Quito Metropolitan District, Ecuador, located on the edge of Tumbaco valley just east of the capital at about 2200 m (7217 ft) above sea level, is located on the north west area of Ilalo volcano.
Because it is at a lower altitude than Quito, it has a warmer climate (about 2 to 5 degrees Celsius higher).
Well known, because of their neighborhoods, this area is inhabited by middle-upper class people. It is the home of the San Francisco de Quito University , one of the most prestigious private universities in Ecuador (About USFQ in English). Highly prestiged private high schools are also located in this area such as "Colegio Aleman", "Colegio Internacional SEK los valles",CMSFQ (Colegio Menor San Francisco de Quito) and others.
Because of Quito's fast-growing expansion during the last 35 years, Cumbaya is now part of Quito's metropolitan area.
A newly constructed tunnel (Tunel Oswaldo Guayasamin) of about 1.5 km long connects the northern part of Quito with Cumbaya, as well as other roads (like Simon Bolivar Avenue) and "los conquistadores" road actually called via Guapulo.
In 2004, the Chaquinan rail trail was opened from Cumbaya 20km to the northeast ending in the village of Puembo.
